Marjorie Young (1872-1956), daughter of General Samuel B. M. Young, married Philadelphia surgeon John H. Gibbon (1871-1956) in 1901. Dr. Gibbon was widely recognized for his pioneering efforts and invention of the heart-lung machine. He also performed the first human open heart bypass operation. As a member of the faculty at Jefferson Medical College, he held the positions of Professor of Surgery and Director of the Department of Surgery (1946-1956) and was the Samuel D.
